SHAW CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Oragami-style Performing Arts Building for a University Campus
For Graceland University, the Shaw Center presented an opportunity transform an existing aging and dour music and drama building. With the addition of a new Black Box Theatre, Recital Hall, Art Gallery, Lobby/Event space and renovation of the existing Proscenium Theater and Movement Classroom, this performing arts building gets a new lease on life. The theater and recital hall bracket the lobby in a way that creates an outdoor porch and forms a new quadrangle as the center of campus life. Architectural expression is abstracted from the reduction of form and articulation of the administration building, the first building on campus and a much revered architectural icon.
